The print reveals Yosemite’s dramatic verticality through bold, unapologetic strokes of ochre, sage, and deep umber. The cliffs rise like a cathedral’s spires, their golden faces catching the late autumn light, while the river below cuts through the scene in a ribbon of silver-blue. Hockney’s signature flat areas of color dominate—each block of ochre or green is applied with a clarity that feels almost photographic, yet softened by his signature hand. The composition balances tension and calm: the towering rock formations pull the eye upward, while the winding river and scattered trees anchor the scene in earthy stability. The mood is one of quiet intensity, where the vastness of nature is both humbling and exhilarating. It’s the kind of print that invites you to linger, to trace the lines of the river with your gaze, and to feel the weight of the cliffs pressing down like ancient guardians.
